Sometimes this is referred to as Khanom Khao. A little sugar can be added to sweeten it. Coconut milk and black sesame seeds can also be mixed in for extra flavor and variety. In the olden days, to stop young men who came to woo her, a young girl could offer him some Khanom Kluea to stuff him with it and stop him from talking too much. It was also a gesture of telling him to leave. This resulted in an expression: “Khanom Kluea buea bao.” (I’m fed up with you, young man). (Taksanan Anakhapruet, Interview, 5 July 2007; Rattana Phromphichai, 1999, p. 821)
