The Lanna wedding tradition
Lanna Astrology for finding a spouse
To make sure that the wedding feast is set for the right match, the elders of both sides will take their astrological information for an expert on the matter to check. If they find something not quite right, they could manage to correct it. The following is what they base their astrological predictions of a perfect match (Thawi Khueankaeo, 1998, pp.189 – 203).
ลักษณะสมพงษ์คู่ผัวเมีย
They will check on the birth time of each of the couple. This is indicated by the element, year and origin as follows:
Birth year Element Origin
Mouse or rat Water Male angel
Bull Earth Male human being
Tiger Wood Female butterfly
Rabbit Wood Female human being
Big snake Gold Male angel
Small snake Fire Male human being
Horse Fire Female human being
Goat Gold Female angel
Monkey Iron Male butterfly
Cock Iron Male butterfly
Dog Earth Female butterfly
Pig Water Female human being
Perfect year
A male angel and a female angel living together promises unity.

A male angel and a female human being living together promises a moderate degree of unity.  If they have a child together, they may have to separate for a period and get back together again later on like Rama and Sida in the Ramayana Epic.

A male angel and a female human being living together can cause constant fighting and quarreling; neither wants to be submissive.

A male and female human being living together promises great fortune and longevity with sweet children.

A male human being and a female butterfly will love each other at first but separate later like Phra Rot and Nang Meri.

A male butterfly and a female human being can have children and love at the beginning but will separate later like the demon Kumphakan and Ketsumontha (in the Ramayana Epic).

A male butterfly and a female butterfly living together will draw fighting and quarreling as both are cruel by nature.

How to predict a perfect match
If one wants to know if a prospective couple will be a perfect match or not, or whether they will live happily together or not, one can calculate by adding the number of their date birth together and multiplying it by 12 and then dividing by 7. the fraction obtained can be interpreted as follows:

Fraction Interpretation
1: Hardship and lack of money
2: Moderately good
3: Love each other well
4: Have plenty of everything
5: Surrounded by lots of good friends
6: Wife domination
7: Full of illness

If the outcome is "0" it is considered a 7 fraction. This is obtained by adding the number of the day of the week they were born under. For example, Sunday is 1, Monday 2, Tuesday 3, Wednesday 4, Thursday 5, Friday 6 and Saturday is 7.
Will she be a good wife?
This can be predicted by adding together the year of the Thai minor era* of the two parties and multiplying by 3 and dividing by 7. then the fraction obtained can be interpreted as follows:

Fraction Interpretation
1, 2: This couple will not make it.  They will not prosper.
3, 7: Though they have inherited a millionaire's wealth, they are going to end up being bankrupt.
4, 5, 6: They are a perfect match.  Though poor, they will become millionaires.
0 The couple will have to beg to survive; they will have a hard life.
* Thai minor era beginning March 21, 638 AD
What is the couple's future going to be like?
The calculation is made using the Thai minor era the same way as the one above and it can be interpreted as follows:

Fraction Interpretation
1: They'll face hardship until old age.
2: She'll be taken away by another man to be his wife.
3: They'll lose everything they have acquired.
4: They'll be blessed with lots of children.
5: They'll have lots of cattle.
6: They'll be materially rich.
7: They'll always shed tears with sadness and suffering.
What will the couple's fortune be?
Also add their age (number of years) together and multiply by 3 and divide by 7. the fraction obtained from it can be interpreted as follows:

Fraction Interpretation
1: They'll get a thief's treasure which will not last long.
2: They'll get the god Indra's treasure which is wonderful
3: They'll get a female merchant's treasure and be moderately wealthy.
4: They'll get a commoner's treasure which is of moderate wealth.
5: They'll get a millionaire's treasure which is wonderful.
6: They'll get a male merchant's treasure which is also wonderful.
7: They'll get a ship's treasure which means they'll get a lot but will not be either rich or poor.  They'll just manage to get along.
