Boonserm Satrabhaya

   ‘Burning illegal opium ’ of the Kuomintang 93rd Division in exchange for settlement at Doi Mae Salong, Mae Fa Luang District, Chiang Rai.

   Crowds of people come to witness the opium pipe burning at Tha Pae Gate after the Prime Minister, Field Marshal Sarit Thanarat, announced the end of opium trade and smoking in 1959.

   “Getting ready to burn the 20 tons of smuggled opium”. The opium was taken from the 93rd division of the Kuomintang in exchange for the rights for them to stay at Doi Mae Salong, Mae Fa Luang District, Chiang Rai. The opium was burned at the Border Patrol Police Region 2 base at the Dararasami Camp, Mae Rim District, Chiang Mai.

   “Preparing to burn the opium pipes”. Police and Excise Department officers had gathered the opium pipes and piled them at Tha Pae Gate before the burning following Field Marshal Sarit Thanarat’s announcement in 1959.

   The pile of “opium pipes” the police and Excise Department officers in Chiang Mai brought out to be burned at Tha Pae gate after Field Marshal Sarit Thanarat’s announcement to forbid opium trade and smoking nation wide. The “junkies” are standing in mourning over their pipes, 1959.
