On the occasion that Their Majesties the King and Queen brought the guest visitor, H. E. Franz Jonas, President of the Republic of Austria to visit Chiang Mai on January 21-24, 1967, Their Majesties granted the opportunity to the President, the Vice President and a number of officials from Chiang Mai University to meet the President of the Republic of Austria and his team before they made an official visit to the University. Their Majesties hosted a dinner party for all the guests and graciously invited the President of Chiang Mai University (Mr. Sunthon Hongladarom) as well as the Vice President and their wives to sit at the same table with them.
On January 23, 1967, from 10.45 a.m. 2.00 p.m. H. E. the President of the Republic of Austria and his team came to visit Chiang Mai University.
On this occasion, the students from all faculties lined up from the University front gate to the Salatham where the President of Chiang Mai University received their Majesties visitors along with the Vice President and the Deans of all the Faculties. The guests were taken to Salatham where the President of Chiang Mai University gave a welcoming speech and presented a carved wooden elephant bearing the Chiang Mai University emblem as a souvenir to the Austrian President. H. E. the President accepted the gift and gave a speech and presented a microscope to Chiang Mai University to be used in the medical study and signed his name in the Universitys visiting album.
Prof. Dr. Buaret Khamthong, Vice President of Chiang Mai University, took the guest on a tour of the campus, starting from the Presidents Office to the Faculties of Science, Humanities, and the Department of Geography, the Faculty of Social Science. The Deans and the Faculty members along with some officials of the respective faculties received the guests. The visit ended with a reception party at Salatham, which was filled with hospitality and friendliness. Students from various faculties surrounded the visiting President and they followed him to his helicopter to further visit Mae Moh Lignite Power Plant in Lampang.
