Phraya Srivisanvaja

Colonel Phraya Srivisanvaja (Thianliang Hoontrakun) was born on February 25, 1896. The seventh son of Mr. Untui and Mrs. Thonkham Huntrakun, he grew up in his grandparents’ house, Mr. Pin and Mrs Hun Chantrakun, owner of Noi Market. Later, he went back to live with his parents at Chuiho building at the foot of Phitthomsathian. His father died when he was seven years old. Then his mother and two of his older brothers looked after him until he went to study at Assamchan School from 1904-1911. His student code number was 1679 until he finished grade 6 at fifteen years of age. He was sent to study in England with his family’s support. He attended The International College for one year under the care of Messrs. Hasche and Pickering, an agent of Hunsuiho Stores. In 1912, when Mr. Samuel Brighouse, the lawyer of the company returned to England he arranged for him to attend Dulwich College, his name was carved in golden letters in the college autidorium as T.L. Hoon to honor him for always being number one in the exams thoughout his studies there. In 1916, the school sent him as a candidate for a scholarship to study at Oxford University along with two other English students and all three of them were granted the scholarship to study at Lincoln College, Oxford University receiving 50 Pounds annually for 4 years.
By 1919, he received a B. A. with Honors from Oxford University School of Jurisprudence. He came up with a second honor B.C.L. of Oxford University and passed the last final exam with a second honors degree as well, at the end of that year (English Barristers at Law Middle Temple) although he had just one month to prepare for the exam.
From 1920-1921 he was trained in law with Sir Hugh Fraser in London and became a secretary at the Thai Embassy in Paris during the term of the Thai Ambassador Prince Charunsak Kridakon.
He went to receive the B. C. L. and M. A. from Oxford in 1923 as the university regulations stipulated that a student could receive the degree only after he was a student for over seven years.
In 1924, he was granted the title of Luang Srivisanvaja while serving a term in Paris before returning to Bangkok and he received the title Phraya Srivisanvaja in 1928. He was granted the title of Maha Ammate Phraya Srivisanvaja and served as the Undersecretary to the King (Palat thunchalong) in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs when he was 32 years old.
After the administration change on June 24, 1932, he was appointed Minister of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the first government of Thailand’s democratic system with Phaya Manopakonthada as the Prime Minister. The government lasted 361 days. After that, he resigned to manage a private business with Phaya Thepwithun and Phaya Haritchanthonsuwit, opening a law office named “Thepsiharit” until 1946 when he returned to politics, until 1952 when he was appointed to the Privy Council by the king, which was a position he was most proud of and happy with. And although later he resigned (by being borrowed) to be the chief advisor to the Prime Minister serving the country in another role, he was still granted royal kindness until the end of his life.
