Wat Buakkhrok Luang is in Moo 1, Tambon Thasala, Mueang District, Chiang Mai. Theres no clear evidence of when it was built but the murals inside the principal vihara enable us to estimate the age to be around the 24-25th Century B.E. The vihara though small is decorated beautifully especially its ornamental moldings carved delicately in floral patterns. The banisters were molded in a form of makaras swallowing parrot-beaked nagas.
A very famous part of the temple is its murals inside the vihara telling the story of the ten significant past lives of the Buddha. It is interesting not only because of the fine craftsmanship of the painters but also because of its serving as a knowledge base source about the lifestyle of ancient people. An example shown in the pictures is the multi-racial community where the Chinese are seen to be the temple builders with the Burmese wearing their Luntaya wraparound skirts. The knowledge gained about the belief of the people is projected through scenes of people making merit and scenes of different levels of hell with the purpose to teach people be afraid to commit sins.
