Montfort College
-

Montfort College is a school under the management of the Northern Catholic Mission. It was founded when Fr. George Mirrabell journeyed from Bangkok to establish the northern catholic mission in Chiang Mai in 1933. The Catholic priest missionaries believed that their religious work could be more effective if there was a school to assist them. Therefore, Fr. Geroge Mirabell invited the Ursuline sisters from the Materdei Institute and the Saint Gabriel priests from the Assumption College, Bangkok, to found schools for boys and girls here. The Ursuline Sisters founded Regina Coeli College and in 1933 the St. Gabriel group came and founded Montfort College. Both schools had a total of 40-50 students during their early years.

Montfort College is on the banks of the Ping river to the south of Chiang Mai City on the land Fr. Fuyoung and Fr Buachat bought in 1914 to build a Catholic Church in Chiang Mai. However, they did not succeed and had to return home due to some kind of problems. When Fr. George Mirabell came in he devided the land into two pieces, one for the church, the other for St Gabriel Priests to establish Montfort College with F. Luis in charge of the construction. The same year, Fr. Mirabell invited sitsters of the Sacred Heart, Bangkok, to found the Sacred Heart Convent in the church area with the objective to educate the Catholic children.

Today, Montfort College accepts students from primary school grade 1 to high school grade 6 with only boys from grade 1 primary school to grade 3 in secondary school. Co-ed grades starts from grade 4 to 6 high school.

Montfort College is divided in two sections. The Primary Section is on Charoen Prathet road on the banks of the Ping River whereas the High School section is on Mahidol Road, Tambon Thasala. Both sections used to be in the same area, However, the number of students enrolled increased each year so the school had to expand to the High School Section near the railway on Mahidol Road which opened in 1985.
