Chao Sethi Khamfan
Hong Hoop Lamphun
Kings and rulers; Northern Royal Family
Kings and rulers -- Lamphun; Kings and rulers -- Thailand, Northern

Chao Khamfan was born in 1756 as the son of Chao Fa Kaew, the second king of Lampang, and Chao Mae Chatha. He had assisted his father and his brothers to expel the Burmese from Lanna completely and was granted the title of “Chao Mueang Kaew” by the King of Thonburi (the title was changed to “Chao Burirat” by King Rama IV of Rattanakosin). His duties were to assist Chao Kawila in the administration of Nakhon Chiang Mai. Later King Rama II made him the first ruler of Nakhon Lamphun in 1814.
At that time, Lamphun was more or less a deserted town full of large trees and wildlife. He had to clear the land and rebuild the town having a viceroy named Bunmamaueang as his assistant.
One year after being the ruler of Lamphun, he was ordered by King Rama II to serve as viceroy of Chiang Mai. When the second king of Chiang Mai, Chao Thamlankaphuek passed away in 1923, he was appointed king of Chiang Mai until he died in 1825. So, he was king of Chiang Mai for three years.
People called him Chao Sethi Khamfan because one of his wives was a daughter of a Burmese millionaire named Mom Tavoi from Mueang Yuam, making him become richer than the other brothers among the Chao Chet Ton family.
Chao Sethi Khamfan had a queen and royal consorts, 16 altogether, plus 20 sons and 24 daughters. The famous sons or princes were
1.Chao Chailanka Phisansophakkhun, 6th ruler of Lamphun, father of Princess Khampaeng.
2.Chao Nan Thamkuka or Phraya Ratana-anakhet, ruler of Chiang Rai, son of Princess Khampaeng.
3.Chao Burirat of Chiang Rai (Chao Phukiang), son of Mom Khamla.
4.Chao Rachawong of Chiang Mai (Chao Mahaphromkhamkhong), son of Mom Tavoi.
Chao Sethi Khamfan died in 1825, having been ruler of Lamphun for one year and Chiang Mai for three years.
