On January 9, 1968, His Majesty the King and Princess Ubonrattana, the Kings oldest daughter, arrived at the ceremonial pavilion at the Faculty of Medicine, Chiang Mai University to present the Principal Buddha image of Chiang Mai Province through the Governor of Chiang Mai.
H. M. the King had the Buddha image named Phraphuttha Nawaratbophit cast to present to each province as the principal Buddha image of the respective province throughout the country. The lotus base of the image houses some small Buddha images made from the sacred dust gathered from all provinces in the country. The image is meant to express gratitude toward the Three Gems and to mark the unity of the Thai people and the nation.
