Approximately 50 student volunteers from the Chiang Mai University Student Union went on their first volunteer project at Ban Pok Village of Samoeng Nuea Sub-district, Samoeng Distrtict, Chiang Mai Province on March 10 – 24, 1967 or 15 days. A survey of various locations of the Sub-district, namely Mae Loei, Mae Phae, Pong Kwao, Tindong, Na Fan, Palan and Mae Pa, indicated that there were many problems there. And in order to give them appropriate advice and assistance, the Committee on Volunteer Development Work of the Student Union, agreed to divide the students into several units to be responsible for the following tasks:
Civil work dealt with building a midwifery station at Ban Pok and renovating some walls of certain public places as well as improving the walkway to go up to the religious site of Phrabatt Tindoi, approximately 170 meters long along with building four toilets for the village school.
Health related work provided a mobile clinic to visit patients at their houses and give physical checkups and medicine to the villagers at the camp in the village school. About 120 students of Ban Pok School, 90 from Palan School and 45 from Mae Pa School came for checkups and treatment. It was found that most of the villagers suffered from malnutrition and goiters.
Community activities were done by setting up some women’s groups to teach embroidery and sewing as well as some handicrafts. Students were given textbooks and writing tools and villagers received food and useful tools.
Agriculture related assistance was given by conducting an area survey and proposing projects to the government such as digging irrigation canals, distributing seeds, books on modern farming and simple advice on soil conservation as well as promoting a high yield planting method.
