Chiang Mai University Received the Crown Prince of Japan

            Their Majesties the King and Queen accompanied Prince Akihito, the Crown Prince of Japan and Princess Michiko, his royal consort, during their visit to Chiang Mai on December 18-21, 1964. This was the official visit to Thailand to strengthen relations between the two countries. The members of the royal families of the two countries have exchanged visits several times.
            On the occasion of their visit, Chiang Mai University had a Welcoming Gate set up along with a table for paying respect to the Buddha at the front of the University. Several senior officials, namely the Vice President of Chiang Mai University and his wife, the Vice President of Student Affairs and his wife along with the deans of all the faculties and their wives as well as the President of College One (student dormitory) and his wife went to receive the royal state visitors and their Majesties at Chiang Mai Airport. After that, they also came to receive them at the university gate going with other teachers and students while the royal vehicles paused to go to Bhuping Palace.
            Prof. Dr. Buaret Khamthong, Vice President of Chiang Mai University, presented a flower garland to the King and a flower bouquet to the Queen and their royal visitors. Mrs. Sumana Thongkham and Prof. Dr. M. L. Tui Xumchai and a male and a female student representative made the presentation of the flowers.
            On the day of the royal departure, the Vice President and his wife went to see them off at Chiang Mai Airport while the faculty members, officials and students came to see them off at the front gate of the university.
            The Welcome Gate in front of Chiang Mai University was designed to be a Japanese style gate painted red and decorated with colorful lights and lanterns with a welcoming message written in Japanese and English.
