Their Majesties the King and Queen came to preside over the opening ceremony of Chiang Mai University on Sunday, January 24, 1965. The schedule was as follows:
9.00 a.m.
1. Senior government officials and chiefs of the government units, honored guests and officials of Chiang Mai University and the media representatives gathered at the ceremonial venue.
2. Chiang Mai University students lined up on both sides of road 17, facing the road, from the front gate to the ceremonial venue alternating between male and female students and in a consistent distance from one person to another.
3. The Boy Scouts orchestra band formed a pattern on the open space of the ceremonial venue next to their tents with 15 meter distance from the tents.
9:30 a. m.
The head of the Sangka and senior monks (10 persons) were seated and began the religious rites and chanting while Their Majesties approached the ceremonial venue.
10.30 a.m.
1. Their Majesties royal car reached the University through the main gate and stopped at the royal pavilion while everybody stood up to welcome and pay respect to them. The orchestra played the Royal Anthem (Phleng Sanrasoen Phra Barami)
2 President of the Chiang Mai University Council received Their Majesties and invited them to sit in the pavilion.
3. Mrs. Sumana Thongkham presented the flower garland to Her Majesty.
4. The President of Chiang Mai University read the report on Chiang Mai University.
5. His Majesty the King replied and granted a speech to the officials and students before pressing the button to mark the opening of the university while the monks chanted an auspicious prayer and the orchestra played an auspicious song.
6. A female representative of the students presented to Their Majesties a picture album of Chiang Mai University and a book commemorating the occasion along with the university visitors book for Their Majesties to sign. Then Prof. Dr. Buaret Khamthong, the Vice President of Chiang Mai University was granted the royal decoration of the Por-Ror level.
11.00 a.m.
Their Majesties walked around looking at the university progress and some of the buildings such as the Presidents office, the first male students dormitory and the Science Building respectively before departing.
