On August 29, 1936 Chiang Mai was upgraded to Chiang Mai City Municipality according to the Municipal Act, marking it the first Municipality in Thailand. Nai Worakarnbancha (Senior Colonel Nai Worakarnbancha) was the first mayor of Chiang Mai. He was former Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister during Field Marshall Plaek Pibulsongkrams government.
At the very beginning, the office of the municipality was in the Chiang Mai Sanitary District Office (now the Chiang Mai Municipal Hospital). When WWII broke out, the Municipality Office was moved outside the city and when the war ended it was moved back to a temporary site at the Khum Chedi Kio, a royal residence built by Chao Kaew Nawarat the 9th ruler of Chiang Mai (1911-1939) for HRH Chao Dara Rasami on the occasion of her return to Chiang Mai. The residence is in the area of the present day American Consulate.
The present Municipality building was built around 1995. It was once arranged as a royal accommodation for H.M. the King and H.M. Queen Sirikit on their first visit to Chiang Mai in 1958.
