His Majesty King Bhumibol and Her Majesty the Queen, Crown Prince Akihito, the Crown Prince of Japan, and Crown Princess Michiko visited Chiang Mai on a Royal flight from December 18-21, 1964. A reception ceremony was held at Chiang Mai Airport at 13.55 hrs. of the 18th. Their Majesties and the Royal Highnesses went through the city within the area of Chiang Mai Municipal before going on to stay at the Bhubing Palace. A welcome ceremony and the Royal Khan-tok banquet was prepared at the Palace.
On December 19, His Majesty the King and Her Majesty the Queen with the royal guests went to see elephant performances arranged by the Forest Industry Organization at Mae Sa Forest Garden. Their Majesties had lunch at the waterfall. At 14.30 hrs. Their Majesties and the royal guests went to see the Folk Industry and Craft Fair at the Recreation Building, The Faculty of Medicine, Chiang Mai University.
Their Majesties and the royal guests returned to Bangkok on December 21, at 11.00 hrs.
This was Crown Prince Akihitos and Crown Princess Michikos first formal visit to Thailand in a return for Their Majesties visit in November 1963. After this visit to Thailand the royal families of Thailand and Japan have regularly exchanged visits. The Prince and Crown Princess have visited Thailand as the royal guests many times after this.
