The Center of the Promotion of Arts and Culture, Chiang Mai University is near the irrigation canal under the cool shade of various kinds of trees. The secretariat building of the Center formerly belonged to Mr. Arther Lionel Queripel was built around 1922 in a colonial style. It was renovated and preserved to function as the Social Research Institute’s office until the institute moved to a new location. The Center of the Promotion of Arts and Culture has been allowed to use it as their office since 1994.

Besides this large building, the center has six other ancient houses under its care that have been moved and rebuilt here for academic purposes in Lanna architecture studies as well as being a center of cultural activities.
The Center for the Promotion of Arts and Culture, Chiang Mai University was officially established on July 2nd, 1993. Before then it was part of the Center for the Promotion of Arts and Culture Project initiated in 1985. Under the project the major goal of the center was to preserve and promote the existing culture by researching and gathering primary data, providing services to scholars with needed information and educating the interested public along with arranging discussion forums and conferences to create understanding on issues related to cultural changes. Another goal was to seek the best modules for applying the academic knowledge to preserve art, culture and the environment. Furthermore, the center initiated some art and culture preservation projects such as the Lanna palm scripture preservation project and took on the role of initiating the research policy on culture as well as art and culture preservation. The project coordinated with organizations both at the local level such as the cultural centers of the northern provinces and at the national level like the Office of the National Culture Commission and some Non-Government Organizations (NGOs). The project played a role in publicizing cultural knowledge in the forms of printed materials, exhibitions and performances.

All tasks achieved the goal with cooperation and acceptance from individuals as well as organizations and institutes at all levels, locally, nationally and internationally. It was well aware that there was much more work to do in relation to art and culture since so many provinces in the north wanted to join in the preservation. However, obstacles arose due to the lack of personnel and budgets, preventing the expansion of the project from matching the expectation and from continuing efficiently. Therefore, a move to establish a permanent “Center of the Promotion of Arts and Culture” as part of the university’s unit responsible for the promotion and preservation of art and culture was on its way.

After the proposal was accepted, the Ministry of University Affairs upgraded the project to the Center of the Promotion of Arts and Culture as a government office under the university’s jurisdiction having the same status as a faculty on July 2nd, 1993 as announced in the Government Gazette, vol. 110, section 87. Chiang Mai University gave the center the colonial style building situated on the south of the university on Suthep Road and the Irrigation Canal Road to be used as the office of the Center of the Promotion of Arts and Culture from then on.
