Chang Phuak area means the area around Chang Phuak Gate located around Chang Phuak road which was connected to Chotana road. The name of this area probably came from the two elephant monuments. One elephant was to destroy the universe and the other was for destroying evil giants and both were constructed by the order of King Kawila. He ordered the monuments to be situated at Hua Wiang Gate. At present these two elephants are located at the front part of Chang Phuak transportation terminal. The area in front of Chang Phuak gate had a fountain in the form of elephant (the elephant was painted white) which was the symbol of Chang Phuak gate. Legend has it that there were constructions of Chang Phuak in the period of King San Muang Ma after he returned from the war with Sukhothai.

Originally, Chang Phuak like other areas, was the center of different ethnic groups which included Chinese, natives, Thai Yai and Muslims. The diversity of people could be witnessed from the different religious sites which were the centers of each ethnic group, who are still living around the area in the present time. Of these groups the natives and the Chinese go to Chiang Yuen temple while Thai Yai go to Pa Pao temple. The Muslims have their own center at the big mosque community. This Muslim community was established only after the end of World War II.

One of the main occupations of the Thai Yai in this area was to make beef rind which was quite famous and eaten as a side-dish with Nam-ngiaw noodles. This beef rind is similar to pork rind but it is made from cow hide while the pork rind is made from pork skin. Presently, this occupation does not exist anymore.

The Chang Phuak market is located close to the Chang Phuak Gate. In the past it was the area where the northern merchants brought their goods to be sold to the people in the area. They still continue to come at present though the number is not high. The daily market Chang Phuak starts from 3 or 4 a.m. and closes around 9 a.m. The majority of shoppers are retail merchants and those who sell food. Thus, one can find both the fresh products and ready-made foods. Ready-made foods are sold wholesale like pork rinds, congee, egg-noodles, and Chinese noodles (Kyao-jab). The fresh products are pork, chicken and beef. These meats usually are packed into 12 small bags. The buyers resell them to the workers who work on construction sites or pick local fruit like longan. Chang Phuak market becomes busy again in the evening. This is due to the front part of the market is the location of night market which is famous in Chiang Mai.
