His Majesty the king and Her Majesty the Queen visited the working elephants at Ban Mae Sa, Mae Rim District, Chiang Mai.

The visits to the Northern precincts of kings from Bangkok started in the reign of King Rama IV who at the time was Crown Prince Vajiravut in 1905. King Rama VII and Her Majesty Queen Rambhai Bharni later visited the Payap Precinct in 1926 and the visit of Kings from Bangkok to the Northern precincts was remitted for 21 years.

Until in 1958, His majesty the King and Her Majesty the Queen visited their subjects in the provinces of the northern region during February 27-March 18, 1958. They departed from Bangkok by royal train from Chitlada Station on February 27, 1958 at 06.45 hrs. and stopped at the Ayutthaya, Lop Buri, Nakhon Sawan and Pichit Stations for 3 minutes each. The people gathered and crowed the stations to welcome their Majesties. The Royal Train arrived in Phitsanulok at 15.13 hrs. After the reception ceremony and worship of the Phra Phuttha Chinnaray Buddha image at Wat Phra Si Rattana Mahathat, their Majesties went by the coach to Phitsanulok Provincial Hall which was prepared for their accommodation. The Pavilion in front of the Provincial Hall was crowded with people waiting to welcome their Majesties.

On Friday February 28, 1958 at 9.30 hrs. their majesties performed an alms presenting at Phitsanulok Wittayakhom School in the Wat Phra Si Rattana Mahathat and visited their people at the Naresuan Maharat Camp and Wang Thong District Office. At 16.00 hrs. their majesties went to the Wang Nok-ean waterfall before returning to their residence at 17.30 hrs.

On March 1, 1958 Their Majesties went to Sukhothai by a royal coach. They stopped by the Sisamrong and Sawankhalok District Offices to visit their subjects and then went on to see the historical sites of Sisatchanalai and Mueang Chaleang. At 10.00 hrs. The royal procession stopped to worship at the King Ram Khamhaeng Monument before returning to the resting place at the Sukhothai Provincial Hall.

Sunday March 2, 1958 at 9.00 hrs. their Majesties visited their subjects at the front portico of the Sukhothai Provincial Hall. Then the royal coach took Their Majesties to observe the old Sukhothai City and worshipped the Buddha’s relics at Wat Mahathat and to tour the historical sites. At 15.00 hrs. their Majesties went on to Tak Province to worship at the Phrachao Taksin Monument at the Tak Sin Shrine before going on to reside at the Tak Province Governor’s house.

On Monday March 3, 1958 Their Majesties the King and Queen granted an audience to the people. At 10.00 hrs. Their Majesties went to observe the work of the Bhumibol Dam and visited the people in Tak Province before returning to their residence.

On Tuesday March 4, 1958 Their Majesties journeyed from their residence to visit Thoen District in Lampang. Their Majesties stopped to have lunch at the Li District Office in Lamphun, visited their subjects at Ban Hong and Pasang District, Lamphun Province and arrived in Chiang Mai at 17.30 hrs. and resided at the Chiang Mai Municipality.

On Wednesday March 5, 1958 Their Majesties toured to make merit at Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, The Forestry Work Station of the Forestry Department on Doi Suthep and the Kawilla Camp, respectively. At 16.30 hrs. Their Majesties went to Yupparaj Wittayalai School, where the Northern Government officers and royalties held a welcoming ceremony for Their Majesties.

On Thursday March 6, 1958 Their Majesties arrived at Wat Suan Dok to worship the Phra Chao Kao Tue Buddha image and presented flower garlands and monks robes at the Northern Ruler’s stupas before journeying to visit their subjects at the Hang Dong, San Pa Tong and Chom Thong District Offices.

On Friday March 7, 1958 Their Majesties travelled to Lamphun Province to make merit at Wat Phrathat Hariphunchai. Then Their Majesties the King and Queen traveled to the residence at the Lamphun Provincial Hall and visited their people in Saraphi Province before returning to lodge at the Chiang Mai City Municipality.

Saturday March 8, 1958 Their Majesties relaxed and informally visited the Chiang Mai Provincial Court, Chiang Mai Provincial Hall, The Prince Royal’s College, Dara Academy School and the McCormic Hospital. Their Majesties also went to Huay Kaew and relaxed there until dusk before returning to their lodging.

On Sunday March 9, 1958 Their Majesties traveled to Mae Rim District Office, Dararasami Border Patrol Police Base, Me Faek Irrigation Office in Mae Taeng District, Chiang Dao Cave, Fang Oil Field and returned to their lodging.

On Monday March 10, 1958 Their Majesties traveled to Fang District Office, Mae Suai District Office and lodged at the Chiang Rai Provincial Hall.

On Tuesday March 11, 1958 Their Majesties visited the Military Base Camp Chiang Rai Province and at the Mae Chan District Office before journeying on to the historical sites and the Chiang Saen Tobacco Office. Their Majesties went to observe the geographic view of at the border, visited the people in Mae Sai District and returned to lodge at the Chiang Rai Provincial Hall.

Thursday March 13, 1958 Their Majesties observed the Tobacco Curing Station and went to Phan District Office. Their Majesties went to the Kwan Phayao Fishery Station and Phayao Phittayakhonm School and went on to lodge at the Surasak Montri Camp, Lampang Province.

On Friday March 14, 1985 Their Majesties the King and Queen went out at the throne prepared at the camp with military officers and their wives present. Then their Majesties went on to the Royal pavilion set up in the field of Boonyawat Wittayalai School before going on to worship Phra Kaew Khao that was moved from Wat Phrathat Lampang Luang and placed at Wat Phrathat Don Tao. Their Majesties the King and Queen visited the Lignite Coal Mine in Mae Mo District and the Thai Sugar Factory, Kho Kha District, Lampang before returning to their lodging.

On Saturday March 15, 1958 Their Majesties the King and Queen traveled to Pha Thai Cave. They also visited their subjects at Ngao and Song District Offices in Phrae Province as well as the Phrae Provincial Hall. Their Majesties then returned to lodge at the Phrae Governor’s house.

On Sunday March 16, 1958 Their Majesties the King and Queen went to worship Phra Phuttha Kosai at Wat Phrabat Ming Mueang and visited their subjects at Rong Kwang Distric Office, Phrae Province, Sa District Office, Nan Province an the Nan Provincial Hall. Their Majesties went to worship the Buddha image of Phra Chao Thong Thip at Wat Suan Tan and then returned to their lodging.

On Monday, March 17, 1958 Their Majesties the King and Queen visited their subjects at Sung Men District Office, Phrae Province and went on the train from the Den Chai Railway Station to Uttaradit Province and visited their subjects at Phi Chai Dap HaK Camp and the Armored Division Camp, Laplae District. Then Their Majesties the King and Queen went to make merit at Wat Phrathaen Silaasana and visited the Thai Sugar Factory. Their Majesties took the train from Uttaradit Station and arrived at Chitlada Station at 8.00 hrs. March 18. (Photos tatken in 1958)
