---] Suwanchankot Chedi, or Kukut and Ratthana Chedi of the Dvaravati style before the restoration. Both were built during the reign of Queen Chamathewi, the first ruler of the Haripunchai Kingdom. It is believed that after the queen passed away, they had her body cremated in a forest north of the city and her twin sons, Chao Mahatyoo and Chao Anantayot, brought her bones to be entombed in the stupa in Suwanchangkot Chedi, which has a standing Buddha image housed in each of its four niches in five rows, a total of 60 images. Both chedis are in the compound of Wat Chamathewi, approximately 1.5 km. to the west of the old city. |
